Choosing the right gift for him
We all know how hard it is to choose a gift for a man in our lives. Being a daughter, a sister, a wife, and a friend of a man myself I can understand that through years of giving a gift to a man is puzzling and can feel limited. When I was 6 years old, I drew a get well picture for my father who was recovering in hospital after an operation. When I gave that gift to my father I saw the love and how it cheered him up, it really touched me and since then I’ve enjoyed giving to my nearest and dearest. But I’ve always looked and searched for the gifts which TOUCH them. We learn how to give through our parents at a young age, during religious holidays and birthdays. We recieve our first gifts from our family and are helped and guided by our parents when choosing gifts for the first time using our pocket money as children. I was very lucky having the guidence and patience of my mother who walked around the different shops to find the right gift for my best friends and family. When I did’nt like something, she showed patience and continued with me on the search for the right one. Those times were precious and I cherish them. Now with my own daughter, I am careful when it comes to choosing gifts for her friends. Even though she is only four years old, I encourage her to choose what her friends would like, not herself. So choosing what is right for him is important…but how? Read on for ideas

After the socks, ties and business card wallets, what else is there to choose from? Well now there are endless possibilities it is all about where to look!

Type of man = Type of gift
When choosing a gift for a man, it’s always useful to understand what type of man he is, be it your father, brother, boyfriend, partner or son. Below is a list of men types. Choose your type then read on to choose your gift ideas…
The sports fan
The typical man’s man who loves nothing more than to watch a game with his friends in his ‘man cave’. Where the men get together with their drinks and snacks and have a good old shout at the television and not feel guilty. They surround themselves in comfort food and clothing, then train their hardest to lose the weight. The ideal gifts for this type of man are huge gift baskets for men full of their favourite snacks, energy drinks and a few sports related toys or accessories to get them pumped up and ready to go training. They take their achievements VERY seriously so if they have an award, you could present it in a special frame or buy a glass cabinet for his trophies. If they look upto a sport hero, then you could purchase a signed t-shirt or ball or whatever the hero uses. Or even a signed poster for his ‘man cave’. Other gift ideas are turf coasters from his favourite football or baseball pitch, a gold plated basketball net or this cute marshmellow cocoa mug for him to show his skills when friends are around for coffee.
The super nerd
You will usually find him reading a fantasy book or playing a game on the latest console, a gaming geek! He is very sweet and prefers to interact through books or technology. He is sensitive with gifts, so giving him something that you know he loves would blow his mind! He secretly LOVES suprises and giving him a few quirky gifts would be ideal as he might be picky in what he likes. Maybe make your own gift basket with a few gifts inside wrapped with silver gift wrap would be ideal. Something surprising and shocking to wake him up from his screen tired eyes! This Gallium melting metal really excites people when they see it. When you first see it, it seems like any other shiny metal object, but once placed in your hands it melts into a liquid form. When cooled in the fridge, becomes a solid matter again. The amazing fact is this gift can be used time and time again to shock his friends and family. A very cool thing to have in his posession…He would be crazy not to like this gift. The next gift could be this very cute and entertaining panda chopsticks game. They have to get all the pandas inside the wheel using only a pair of chopsticks. This will keep him amused between his gaming breaks. Other gift ideas for him are anything to do with his favourite fantasy sci-fi series from television of films. For example a Doc who pocket watch, or a signed poster or photo of his sci-fi hero.
The Workaholic intellectual
The man who takes his work home with him. You often find him with a whiskey in one hand and a philosophy book or laptop in the other. His passions in life are his steps up the career ladder. And instead of letting this get to you, just support him and lighten the load. He won’t change his ways overnight. The best way to deal with his passion for work is to support it with giving him either a mixture of wine, fruits and nuts for when he is on breaks from his laptop or book etc. A fuit & nut with wine gift bakset for men would be a good start. Then perhaps choosing a game board to play with the family is a perfect way to bring him back into a communicative role in the house once again. Anything competitive or useful for him to build up his work performance would be really appreciated. These little cuff links with map books are a fun gift from a grand-parent or parent. The keyboard putty cleaner is a useful gift from his co-worker or friend. Wooden puzzles are great to keep his hands busy and eyes out of a book for a little while. First editions of his favourite books is also an idea or to top this off, find a signed vintage copy of a cherished book to add to his library.
The creative and thoughtful
Usually seen carrying a guitar, pencil or a camera. This man needs his gifts to be well thought out, just like him. They should mirror him, his creative abilities and sensitivity. A thoughful gift for a boyfriend or father is a guitar pluck, engraved with initials or a special message. They are re-using old vinyl records to make guitar plucks which still show the individual grooves of the old music that used to play. These guitar plucks hold many memoroies close to the heart. A gift from his wife could be a customised box of matches with the date they met, with ‘I met my match’ written on it as a special keepsake. Perhaps for anniversary ideas, the couple can light romantic candles using the matches with the reminder of their first date. A special gift from parents or a group of close friends could be the ‘giving plate’. This extremely thoughtful gift is an excellent way of telling him you love and care for him, that you want him to share with others and connect with people. To spread the message of caring, he would love this. This plate would be a cool idea for a young man, even a father. What’s so good about this plate is it has no age limits and you can even bake his favourite handmade cookies and present him as a surprise. No man could resist this gift!!!
The young at heart
He NEVER grows up, always the kid. The one who throws his mates a surprise party just to have fun. He loves nothing more than to be spoilt by his loved ones and friends. Any kind of gift would please him. He isn’t picky when it comes to gifts! His mother is his best friend and his partner is his best play friend. His guy friends are always around at his house as he’s a crowd puller. He IS the entertainer. He would love nothing more than to have fun fun and more FUN. A crazy weekend coupon/gift card would be very cool for him…a parachute jump out of a plane, a daring ride on a sandboard. For a couple, a pottery class would be fun as well as romantic for him. But be careful you might get covered in clay hee hee!!! He would appreciate an old vintage toy from his past, something he cherished from childhood, a reminder of his fun. A special edition starwar figure or doc who policebox.. Even a huge gift basket full of childhood sweets would be good enough for his just as sweet heart.
You will often find him at the shops or boutique restaurants trying new cheeses, herbal infused olive oil or even wine tasting. He throws many parties where he stands all night at the barbecue taking pride in his cooking ability, a wannabe chef. He would be happy reading cook books from around the world trying new things is his ability, pride and joy. He shows creativity in all forms of cooking, and loves nothing more than to eat and drink with his loved ones and friends. The way to his heart if for sure his belly and great anniversary ideas for him would be anything to do with food and drink. A gift from his wife would be a set of colour co-ordinated kitchen utensils to go with his current set of saucepans and knife set and when presenting the gift add this note: “With every stir, add a little love;)/Everytime you cook, think of me to add a little pinch of love;)”
What is a hipster you might ask, but you’ve probably already met one and haven’t realised! Hipster is a cool version of the super nerd geek! ‘Hipster’ is a subculture and ‘hipsterism’ is a state of mind. There are hipster men and women, even hipster parents who bring up hipster children. They’re usually in their twenties or thirties. They don’t go by the mainstream and are independant thinkers. Usually found immersed in alternative cultures of every kind searching for new trends in music, the arts and theatre. The hipster man secretly loves to be noticed. He feels the need to be on track and if he isn’t wearing the latest alternative clothing then he doesn’t want to be seen at all. His hair must be styled just right and some hipster men grow long beards. He carries man bags, but they have to look vintage before he goes anywhere near them! An ideal gift would show he’s on top of trends as well as be the topic of intellectual conversations with peers. He might have collectables of vinyl records lying around his house or have a bottle in his bathroom cabinet reading ‘beard oil’ on it. Choose a cool cocktail mixing tool…a quirky new bow tie with a perculiar print which brings attentioin to him or a vintage man bag. A ‘man card’ beer bottle opener is something that he can either hang from his belt or keychain or can be slipped inside his vintage wallet. The perfect gift ideas for him from his family would be a book called: how do i tie a bow tie .
He is found looking at himself in the mirror or surfing the net finding new ways of looking better or improving his interior. Always searching for the next best thing to adapt himself and his home or work place. This man is ALWAYS in control of himself and his surroundings. He may even become obsessive over details that most ignore or don’t notice. His bathroom cabinet is full of products including tweezers and a nail buffer. Choosing gifts for this type is a challenge as they make sure they get what they want. Their gifts need to be useful and have aesthetic appeal. In some cases he would be obsessive with his posessions to be rare and one offs, special edition prints and antiques from around the world with a story to tell. Good luck with the search of rare and special editions to add to his collections, here are some ideas…
